Stress is such a major part of everyone’s daily life. Between stress in the workplace, to issues at home, the effects of stress and how they can be detrimental to the individual are very real. But not everyone is aware that there are right and wrong ways to handle stress. This paper will examine some of the worst ways to handle stress, and how that can be combated.
Not being involved in physical activity can be adverse to an individual’s health. Studies have proven that by engaging in physical activity, stress results are lowered, and individuals produce endorphins, which are natural mood elevators (Anxiety and Depression Association of America). By not being active (such as through an exercise program, running, or otherwise moving the body), individuals are not able to relieve the built up tension they are feeling, which can result in them being even more stressed out.
More often than not, other people are the cause of one’s stress. It is highly recommended by professionals that one never use stress-relieving techniques, such as violence and physically hurting the person who is causing the problem. Although the short-term effects may seem satisfying, physical violence should never be used to “settle a score” (Glass). Doing so can lead to further issues within one’s life, such as being held on criminal charges for assault and battery, dealing with the repercussions (such as losing one’s job, spending a great deal of money to handle the court case, or worse yet, fighting with someone who is stronger, and able to do serious harm). Instead, there are many more satisfying solutions, including beating up on a pillow while screaming, ripping up photos, or ending a relationship (professional, romantic, or family) that a person feels is the cause of their stress, and is beyond fixing (Glass).
By looking for techniques that are helpful, and produce positive benefits, an individual can lead a life with minimal stress.

Part of this duty requires assessing work conditions and being aware of how environmental factors can influence an employee's health and thus productivity. Frequent changes in the work environment can lead to high stress levels among staff because stressful work environments place high demands on the physical and mental energies of workers and thus negatively affect productivity (1). In order to manage the stress felt by employees, management must examine the concept of stress entirely. Potential stressors in the work environment must be identified, the role individual differences play in stress must be acknowledged and the symptoms of stress in employees must be observed so that a course of action designed to moderate stress levels among employees can be formulated. Employee stress can be caused by any environmental conditions which place physical or mental demands on an individual (2). In order to manage stress levels in the workplace, it is necessary to identify potential stressors, both job related and work-nonwork related. Workplace stressors fall into several categories. Interpersonal stressors arise as a result of employee interaction and are most prevalent. These include sexual harassment and workplace violence. Role related stressors encompass role ambiguity, role conflict and work overload. Role ambiguity occurs when workers are uncertain of what is expected from them. Role conflict arises due to the competing demands they face at work. A doctor for instance, must be caring but also remain detached, and drawing the line between the two can be a source of conflict. The last role-related stressor, work overload, is brought on by increasing worked hours as well as workload intensity. Another category of stressors includes task control stressors. These occur when conditions limit an individual from controlling tasks or the pace of work. Sales, production and service jobs exhibit high stress levels because of their lack of work control (2).
