Hawa Mahal or the ‘Palace of Winds’

The state of Rajasthan proudly speaks of its aura of royalty and its capital city, Jaipur excels in luring its visitors from India and abroad. The Pink City or Jaipur houses a unique piece of architectural excellence – the Hawa Mahal, popular as the ‘Palace of Winds’.

Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, who was then the ruler of Rajasthan and had also planned and build the city of Jaipur in 1727. This monument is one example that reasonably justifies three key aspects – dedication, purpose and creativity.

The unique five-storied structure resembles the crown of Lord Krishna made of peacock feathers. The Maharaja was a big devotee of Lord Krishna and therefore dedicated this amazing piece of art to the Almighty. The purpose or the motive behind the construction of Hawa Mahal was to allow the royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below, through small windows unnoticed, thereby respecting the system of ‘Purdah’.

Both the exterior and interior of Hawa Mahal, represents this 50 feet tall palace as an architectural delight. Following are the key highlights:

  • 953 small windows or jharokhas
  • A structure which is not properly anchored to the ground and rather attached to a wall, makes it unique.
  • Thickness of the palace’s walls being less than a foot!
  • Intricate designs, domed canopies, floral patterns, fluted pillars, fine stone inlay and arches- Hawa Mahal is a fusion of Rajput and Islamic styles of architecture.

Do not miss the spectacular view of Jaipur from its windows that allows the coolest breeze to flow across the fabulous labyrinth of small rooms and corridors inside the ‘Palace of Winds’.
